the Red Cross booklet could be purchased in theaters showing the Evangelion movies in Japan. Basically, it serves as a glossary of terms used in Evangelion and clears up some points that may have been unclear in the series and movies. Following are the contents of this booklet.

The computer code to indicate that data which can't be analyzed.
666 PROTECTOR:
A temporary computer program protector devised by Dr. Ritsuko Akagi to prevent other MAGI computers of the world from hacking the Original Nerv MAGI computer at Geofront. It is officially called Danang Type-B Defense screen and will collapse after 223,240 seconds upon initiation.
A-17:
A special order issued by the Japanese Government to allow Nerv to seize the 8th Angel alive.
A-801:
The Japanese Government issued this directive. In legal terms it abolished the legal protection it gave to Nerv, transferring the United Nations authority to that of the Japanese Government, allowing the government to seize by force the headquarters of Nerv.
A10 NERVE:
In neural terms, it is the nerve that produces natural morphine in our brains, also known as the pleasant section of the brain. It is also the section that manages our long-term memories. In the anime, the A10 pulse and synchronization ratio are deeply related to the way the Evangelion Robot reacts to the thoughts and orders of the pilot.
AT (ABSOLUTE TERROR) FIELD:
A force field produced biologically by Angels and Eva robots. Conventional weapons cannot penetrate this field. In the field of psychology, AT-field means the imaginary wall those patients with high egos and autism produce.
ADAM:
Second Impact. From episode eight of the TV series, we see Kaji and Gendo talking about the specimen called Adam and Kaji said "Its for the Human Complement Program isn't it? " and Gendo replied, "Yes it is, Its the first human ADAM". Based on the Old Testament of the Christian Bible, Adam was the first man to have been created by God in his own image.
AKAGI RITSUKO:
A scientist belonging to the first section of the Technology Bureau of the Technology Development Department in NERV HQ. She is responsible for the E Project and is the daughter of Dr. Akagi Naoko, who built the basic system of MAGI. Usually in white coat, she consumes lots of coffee and tobacco when she works. She is also a friend of Katsuragi Misato since college years. Although like her mother she engaged in adultery with Ikari Gendo, she rebelled against him at the final stage of the Complementation Plan. As an act of taking revenge on him, she destroyed all the copies of Ayanami Rei. As a result, she was placed under solitary confinement within NERV HQ. However, since she is needed for the self-defense of MAGI, she is released. Birthday is November 21. Blood type B. Age 30.
ANGELS:
According to the Old Testament of the Bible, the Angels are the servants of God. It also represents the 12 Disciples of Christ in the New Testament. In the anime, angels are entities that appear in search of Adam, the first angel that appeared on earth. They are labeled as enemies of mankind, they are also powerful, sentient and capable to adapt to different situations.
AOBA SHIGERU:
An operator of the Central Military Operation Room in NERV HQ. His rank is lieutenant. His responsibilities include communication, and data analysis. His hobby is guitar. Birthday is May 5. Blood type A
ARMAMENT BUILDINGS:
This buildings looks like other high rise buildings of Tokyo-3 except it houses the arsenals and ammunitions, like the Palette Rifle, of the Evangelion Robots. It is scattered strategically all over the city in anticipation from an Angel attack. Some of these buildings also houses the umbilical electrical cable that the Evangelion Robots need to function on external power.
ARK:
Fuyutsuki referred Lillith as the ARK when she escaped Geofront and initiated the third impact. He said "From the emptiness of the third impact she will become an ark for the souls of mankind". However Lillith failed when her AT Field disappeared when Eva-01 refused to enter her.
AYANAMI REI:
First Child. The dedicated pilot of EVA-00. A young girl who apparently lacks emotions. Her body was actually salvaged from what was left behind of Yui's body inside EVA, and a lot of body copies were later prepared in the Terminal Dogma so that when one Rei dies she could be replaced by another. The present Rei is the third one. The first was killed by Dr. Akagi Naoko; the second was killed in her battle against the 16th Angel. Although the personalities of these 3 Rei are different from each other, this is due to the environment. Their soul is one and the same. Also, it seems that this soul was somehow derived from Lillith. At the final stage of the Complementation Program, she betrayed Gendo, returned to Lillith out of her own judgment and handed the future to Gendo's son -- Ikari Shinji. Birth date unknown.
BLACK MOON:
A multi-dimensional space that Lillith produce, the source of all life. Also known as the egg of Lillith. When the 3rd Impact occurred it appeared above Tokyo-3.
BAKELITE:
A red liquid solution that solidifies immediately upon application. It was used to stop Eva-00 when it went berserk in episode 5 and was used by Misato to stop the advancing force of the JSSDF when it infiltrated Nerv in Episode 25 of the movie. Bakelite is typically used in electric cords for insulation and to prevent heating of the wires.
BC WEAPON:
Biological and Chemical Weapon, meaning weapons like poison gas or bacteria. In ep.25 "Air", Aoba Shigeru feared that the Strategic Self Defense Force might deploy a BC Weapon.
CENTRAL DOGMA:
A huge place under Geofront where Lillith was nailed to a red cross, it is filled with LCL and is the lowest point (basement) of the Nerv facility. The term was derived from microbiology that describes the reverse process of DNA turning to RNA and finally to Protein.
COMMUNITY/COLONY:
Misato used this word when she said that human are "a colony of worthless" from the point of view from the Complementation Plan. For colony, it originally means a group of individual organism linked to each other, each of them can produce new individuals by splitting or budding. Each individual organism within a colony can live as its own independently.
CORE:
The core is the weakest part of the Angel, it is the red globe attached somewhere in the body of the Angel. Eva-01 also contains a red core. Whether Eva-00 and Eva-02 has a core is still uncertain.
DEAD SEA SCROLLS:
The Dead Sea Scrolls was the single reference Seele used to predict the future of mankind and also was used as a blueprint to produce the Evangelion Robots. The Dead Sea Scrolls do in fact exist and was discovered in 1947 near the Dead Sea in Israel in an abandoned cave. The contents are the Old Testaments and some parts of the New Testament of both the Jewish Bible and the Christian Bible, written between the 1st and 3rd Century AD, some of the contents of the scrolls remain a secret. Whether the Dead Sea scrolls that Seele possess is the same as the real Dead Sea scrolls is uncertain.
DESTRADO:
In ep.26, when Hyouga checks on the status of EVA-01, he confirms that the Destrado of the pilot -- Ikari Shinji -- is getting physical (PY: or un-metaphysical, material). Destrado is, according to the theory advocated by E.Weiss, the energy of the self-destructive impulse. It is the antonym of Libido. It's meaning is different from the energy of "Instinct of Death", advocated by P.Federn, the master of Moltedor-Weiss.
DUMMY PLUG:
Since it is difficult to find eligible pilots to control the Evangelion Robots, the solution to solve that was to use a dummy plug, a digitized personality profile of a pilot to make the robot run even with out a living pilot inside. It can also be a clone of a pilot not necessarily a computer. However the first time a dummy plug was used was with Eva-01 when the 13th Angel attacked. And it was a digitized computer program of Rei Ayanami to replace that of Shinji Ikari who refused to kill the 13th Angel. On the other hand, the Dummy Plug prepared by SEELE used the personal pattern of the Fifth Child (Nagisa Kaworu).
ENTRY PLUG:
The cockpit of the Evangelion Robots, where the pilots enter inside and are injected into the robot. The entry plug is filled with oxygen rich LCL and when activated, a full 3-D screen surrounds the pilot. The entry plug is shaped like a long capsule injected to the lower base of the skull of the Evangelion robot. During emergency, the entry plug could be ejected using boosters attached to it.
EVA:
German word for Eve, a religious word derived from the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. According to the Bible, Eve was the wife of Adam, the first man to be created by God in his likeness. She tempted Adam into eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, and was exiled forever as punishment for disobeying God. In the anime, Eva is the shorten name of Evangelion, the humanoid robot. There is currently Eva-00 to Eva-13 produced.
EVA-01:
EVA-01 TEST TYPE. The first EVA to be thrown into real battle. It is the second EVA, after EVA-00, which was built in EVA HQ. Although it contributes a lot in its participation of many battles against Angels, it also behaves unexpectedly in many occasions: going berserk, starting up without the presence of Entry Plug, staying active after its activity time limit etc. It obtained the S^2 Engine directly by defeating and devouring the 14th Angel. Coloring is purple. Dedicated pilot is Third Children -- Ikari Shinji. It seems that inside it lives the soul of his mother -- Ikari Yui. Also, it seems that the physical body of EVA-01 was made using Lillith. This is why in the case when the Spear of Longinus was lost, EVA-01 became the only substitute of Lillith as the tool for Human Complementation.
EVA-02:
EVA-02 PRODUCTION MODEL. The first EVA in the world to be built for real battles. Design and manufacture of components were done by Japan. The final assembly and start-up experiment were done in Germany. It went through a real battle when it battled with the 6th Angel, which suddenly appeared during its delivery to Japan. Afterwards, it joined in the defense of Neo-Tokyo-3 and assumed the responsibility of ambushing the Angels. Coloring is red. Dedicated pilot is Second Child -- Souryu.Asuka.Langley. Inside EVA-02 lived the soul of Asuka's mother -- Souryu.Kyouko.Langley.
EVANGELION:
Word taken from the German word: evangelium, which has religious connotations meaning Gospel. It is also used as a slang to mean Absolute Truth. This anime tends to use a lot of religious words to hide certain denotations of the show. It is also the formal name of the humanoid robots that are sent to counter-attack an Angel treat. These robots took Nerv, 14 years to build and at incredible cost of taxpayers money. It also serves an important role in implementing the Human Complement Program. Apparently only 14-year-old kids without mothers can ride the robots. Evangelion 00 to 02 is under Nerv Headquarters' direct control.
EVANGELION, MASS PRODUCTION MODEL (EVA SERIES):
The nine EVA (EVA-05 to EVA-13) built at different NERV branches. Different from the existing EVA's, these EVA's are under the command of SEELE, not NERV. Since they have S^2 Engine mounted, they have infinite active duration, and thus do not need Umbilical Cables. They also have foldable wings, which enable them to fly. In order to start the Human Complementation Project, SEELE throw them into their battle against NERV, and as a group they destroy EVA-02.
FIRST CHILD:
It means Ayanami Rei, the first suitable person picked by Marduk organization. She acts as the "experimented" for all experiments related to E-Plan like the start-up experiment of EVA etc. She participated in real battles as the dedicated pilot of EVA-00, and completed many ambush operations against the Angels.
FIRST IMPACT:
65 million years ago the dinosaurs went into extinction when a giant asteroid hit the earth. This was referred as the first impact.
FRIGATE:
A military ship standing by at the underground lake inside Geo-Front. It has the high speed and sea-worthiness of a destroyer, and can be used for anti-submarine, anti-air and alert patrol purposes. Since the ship belongs to NERV, at the broadsides of the ship the printed letters of "NERV" could be seen. At ep.25 "Air", it is destroyed by the fighting between EVA02 and JSDF.
FRUIT OF LIFE:
It is mentioned by Fuyutsuki in ep.26 as the thing that Angels have. It is written in "Genesis" of "Old Testament Bible" that at the center of Eden there were the "Tree of Wisdom" and "Tree of Life". Human disobeyed the order from God and ate the "Fruit of Wisdom". But what if the "Fruit of Life" was instead eaten? Could the answer be the Angels? Moreover, the myth has it that one can live forever if he eats the fruit from the Tree of Life.
FRUIT OF WISDOM:
The "thing" that is held by human. The product of this wisdom seems to be "Science", which is praised by Gendo as "the power of human" but ridiculed by Fuyutsuki as what "caused the Second Impact". Both EVA and the Human Complementation Plan are all the products of this wisdom. From Genesis of the Old Testament of Bible, it was said that at the center of the Garden of Eden beside the Tree of Life, there was a Tree of Wisdom -- a Tree that knows good and evil. Human disobeyed the order of God and ate its fruit. As a result God banished human from the Garden of Eden and imposed many constraints of freedom on human. If that is the case, does it mean that human got wisdom in exchange for banishment from the Garden?
FUYUTSUKI KOUZOU:
The deputy commander of the secret agency NERV. Before the Second Impact, he taught in the University of Kyoto as the professor of Meta-Biology. It is at the same place that he got to know Ikari Yui and Rokubungi Gendo. Even shortly after the Second Impact, he was in opposition to Gendo. However, after their meeting at the Research Institute for Artificial Evolution, he suddenly changed and started to help Gendo. It also seems that he holds not just a little good feeling towards Ikari Yui. Birthday April 9th. Blood type AB.
GAF'S ROOM:
A word spoken by Fuyutsuki in ep.26. He said that the opening of Gaf's Room has the same meaning as the start of the world as well as the opening of the door of the finale. When this door is open, the surface of the Earth turns to LCL, human can no longer keep intact their physical forms as individuals but return to LCL form. At TV ep.21, Ritsuko also mentioned the Gaf's Room.
GEHIRN:
It is the investigative and research organization of the Human Complement Program Committee. It had several branches around the world. The first members included its chief of operations: Gendo Ikari and Head Technician: Dr. Naoko Ritsuko. Later Professor Fuyutsuki, Dr. Ritsuko Akagi and Col. Misato Katsuragi joined in. It was formed to prevent the occurrence of the Third Impact. Its name was later changed to Nerv when MAGI computer went on line in the year 2010.
GEOFRONT:
The place that houses the headquarters of Nerv. It is a giant cave like open space beneath Tokyo-3. Unauthorized people are not allowed to enter this top-secret facility. The open space measures some 6 km in diameter.
GOD'S IN HIS HEAVEN. ALL'S RIGHT WITH THE WORLD:
This phrase is written under the symbol of Nerv. Robert Browning of the Victorian Age of England wrote this famous phrase.
HUMAN COMPLEMENT PROGRAM:
A program proposed by the powerful international secret 12-man organization committee known as SEELE. Nerv was the organization that was to initiate the program. In Misato's words the human complement program is "Man has already reached a dead end on its present state of evolution, the next step is to artificially initiate the evolution of man into a perfect single being." Still mystery still surrounds the real meaning and objective of this program and the program of Seele is different from that of Gendo and Prof. Fuyutsuki.
HYOUGA MAKOTO:
Rank lieutenant, belonged to the first section of the Bureau of Combat Operation of the Central Combat Operation Command Department in NERV. He serves as the combat aide-de-camp for Misato, the leader of the Combat Operation HQ, and also responsible for things like analysis of the combat situation. He has some good feeling towards Misato, his superior, and lends his hand for her objectives, collecting intelligence information for her at many occasions. Birthday February 13th. Blood type B.
IBUKI MAYA:
Second Lieutenant. Belonged to the First Section of the Bureau of Technology in NERV HQ, she is responsible for tasks like the monitoring of the Synchronization Rate of EVA pilots and the gathering and analysis of EVA-related data. She respects very much Dr. Akagi Ritsuko, her immediate superior. For personal character, it is said that she is fastidious, but honest and sincere. Birthday July 11. Blood type A. Age 24
IKARI GENDO:
The commander of the secret agency NERV. His old surname was Rokubungi (PY: it means sextant). He changed his name after he married Ikari Yui, whom he knew since student years. He became the president of the Research Institute for Artificial Evolution, which was actually a front cover for the works of "E Project". After Yui died, he busied himself with "Adam Project" and Human Complementation Project". He got the support from SEELE, and managed to realize things like the construction of EVA. However, his "honeymoon" with SEELE lasted only until the elimination of the last Angel. Afterwards, their differences in objectives became apparent and it developed into violent military clashes. Birthday April 29. Blood type A.
IKARI SHINJI:
Third Children. The dedicated pilot of EVA-01. Lost his mother when he was still young, he spent his life until 14 living under an acquaintance of his father. He was summoned by his father Ikari Gendo, the chief commander of secret agency NERV, just when the 3rd Angel came to attack, and thus became a EVA pilot. Although afterwards he stayed in Neo-Tokyo-3, he lives in the apartment of his superior Katsuragi Misato because there is a deep communication gap between him and his father, who had been separated from him for a long time. Having an introvert character, he often minds how he is looked at by others. And since he is weak at self-expression and communication with others, he frequently engages in repetition of avoiding problems and disobeying orders. When the Strategic Self-Defense Force attacked NERV, he was trapped in a state of lost self. This is why his counter-attack was procrastinated. Birthday June 6. Blood type A. Age 14
IKARI YUI:
Wife of Ikari Gendo. It seems that at the very beginning she belonged to SEELE. She was married to Gendo (originally Rokubungi Gendo), whom she knew since the Kyoto University years, and gave birth to Shinji. After marriage, she worked with Gendo in GEBIRTH and spent a lot of effort towards the success of "E Project". Died in an accident during an experiment in 2004. Nevertheless, her soul stayed on within EVA-01. It seems that this accident was actually intended by her will. Age when she died: 27.
INTERFACE HEAD SET:
The head set that pilots of the Evangelion Robots use to connect their A10 Nerve with the robot, and thus send the orders thru thoughts when they initiate transfer upon triggering the manual handle beside them with their hands. This also makes them vulnerable to the damages suffered by the robots when they are hit, making them feel what the robot is "feeling" when slugged, knocked, jabbed, walloped, punched or clobbered.
JAPAN STRATEGIC SELF DEFENSE FORCE:
The military arm of the Japanese Government. It was formed after the Spratly Island Fiasco between Japan, Vietnam and China in the year 2003. The Self-Defense Force was dissolved and in its place the JSDF was formed.
KAJI ROUJI:
Belonged to the Special Surveillance Department of the Secret Agency NERV. He also belonged to the Investigation Department of the Internal Ministry of the Government of Japan. Taking orders from SEELE, he infiltrated in NERV to find out its secrets. He arrived at Japan from the Germany branch of NERV, together with the Second Children and EVA-02. He quitted from the Germany branch, and without going back, stayed and worked in NERV HQ. Katsuragi Misato used to be his lover in his student years but later separated from each other. They resumed their relationship after Kaji came back to Japan. Because of his own curiosity, he made enemies and was consequently killed by gunfire. He left the product of all his investigation to Misato. Birthday June 17. Blood type A.
KATSURAGI MISATO:
Rank: Major. Belonged to the first section of military operation bureau of the tactical military operations department in NERV HQ. She is also the leader of the military operations headquarter, responsible for the military command of EVA's. Her father, whom she hated, saved her from the Second Impact. The fact that as a result she lost her father damaged her mentally and this manifested externally as a long period of agnosia (loss of speech). She sees the image of her father in the pendant of cross that she wears. While she is inside NERV, she always keeps a weary suspicion feeling towards the behavior of Commander Ikari. With the information left by her lover Kaji Rouji, she pursued after the truth on her own. Birthday: December 8. Blood type A. Age 29
KEEL LORENZ:
The chairman of the Committee of Human Complementation, also the director of SEELE. His body is totally machine from backbone down. He gave instructions of direct occupation of the secret agency NERV, so as to start complementation with EVA-01.
LCL:
Also known as Link Connect Liquid. It is a yellow liquid rich with oxygen that replaces normal air and directly enters the lungs and protects the pilot by absorbing the shock generated during battle with the Angels. It is close to the amniotic fluid produced by pregnant mothers to support unborn babies in the womb. It has also the smell of blood.
LILLITH:
The giant entity with seven eyes that is nailed in the cross in the terminal dogma at the basement of Nerv Headquarters. Rei combined with Lillith to initiate the third impact. Lillith received all the souls of mankind when it initiated third impact but for some reason its AT Field was lost when eva-01 refused to enter to complete the third impact and it disintegrated thereby releasing the spirits of mankind and the spirits to forever orbit a dead and barren earth. According to Kaworu, this entity is not Adam but Lillith which according to Jewish Lore the name came from the first wife of Adam. Between Adam and Lillith was born the evil spirits.
LONGINUS SPEAR:
It is a large spear that was used somehow toward the first Angel Adam. It was transported to Nerv headquarters from the South Pole and was used to pierce Lillith with it to prevent further growth of it. But Gendo ordered Eva-00 to use it to defeat the 15th Angel and the spear was hurled into space where it first orbited the moon, landed on it and was called by Shinji back to earth to be used to kill Eva-01 but instead it was used by Seele to initiate the third impact. At first Seele was disappointed with Gendo for using the spear without their permission. As Keel (Head of SEELE) said to other SEELE members "With the spear gone, we cant initiate the human complement program using Lillith, The only option left is to use the child of Lillith and retrograde EVA-01". However with Shinji calling the spear back Seele was able to use it again. The spear's name came from the name of a roman soldier who pierced the heart of Christ in the cross to confirm His death.
LONGINUS SPEAR (Copy):
The main weapon of Eva-05 to Eva-13, in its natural state it is a double edge lance but when so desired it changes to a copy of the Longinus Spear in order to penetrate the AT Field of its opponent. It was copied from the original Longinus Spear and was an important instrument in culminating the third impact when Eva-05 to Eva-13 pierced their core with their spare. The spare was also used to defeat Eva-02 when it battled the mass produced Eva-05 to Eva-13.
MAGI:
The first artificial intelligence Super computer MAGI were designed by Dr. Naoko Akagi and are composed of three components. Melchior-1, Balthasar-2 and Casper-3. The three computers operate by tackling problems and forming strategy. The three components of the computer represent the three personalities of its creator Dr. Naoko Akagi. The scientist in her, the mother in her and the woman in her. The three component's name came from the three kings who visited Christ when He was born, according to the Christian Lore. Also the MAGI computer is said to be the 5th generation super computer that uses a cloned human brain as a CPU.
MARDUKE ORGANIZATION:
The main organization that search and selects the pilots qualified to pilot and synchronize with the Eva Robots. The qualifications are rather stiff; apparently only 14-year-old kids without mothers can ride and operate an Evangelion Robot. It has 108 agencies around the world all of which are dummy companies that Rouji Kaji discovered during his search for the true nature of Nerv. These dummy companies were all created by Nerv. The name was taken from one of the gods of the Babylon Empire.
MARK OF NERV:
The Secret Agency NERV has a mark that is composed of three parts: the name of the organization, a picture and a motto. The name of the organization is the 4-character word "NERV". The motto is "God is in his heaven. All is right with the world", a section taken from "Pippa Passes", written by a 19th century poet Robert Browning. And then the picture is a half piece of fig leaf. The fig leaf, according to legend, is the symbol of the original sin, which entangled Adam and Eve. It reminds us of the human who ate the Fruit of Wisdom.
N2 MINE:
The United Nations most powerful conventional weapon. It has the power and strength of a nuclear arsenal but produces no radiation. It cannot eliminate the Angels but it can damage them to some extent and buy time for a counter-attack. N2 stands for Non-Nuclear.
NAGISA KAWORU:
Fifth Children, who was sent by SEELE to NERV. However, his real identity was the 17th Angel. Perhaps he was an Angel that was captured by SEELE at his embryo stage. Different from other Angels, he has a mind quite close to humans. On documents his birth-date is AD2000 September 13th. In human form he made contact with Third Children (Ikari Shinji). Although he had good feelings towards Shinji, he was strangled and killed by EVA-01 piloted by Shinji. It was he who said "Life and Death are equivalent" and "Only one life-form could be chosen to be given the future".
NERV:
Word taken from German to mean nerve. Nerv is a special United Nations Top Secret organization dedicated to the discovery, study, counter-attack and subsequent destruction of entities known as Angels. Most of its activities are classified and "for your eyes only". The special humanoid fighting machines known as Evangelion Robots are the central arsenal of this special agency, along with other high technology weapons that this robots use. The main headquarters of Nerv is in Hakone, Japan. It rests below Tokyo-3 in a place 80 meters below 2015's sea level, called Geofront. It has branches in all G-7 countries plus China and Russia. The commander in chief of all operations of Nerv Headquarters is Gendo Ikari followed by his executive officer, scientist and former professor Kozo Fuyutsuki. Followed by the chief strategist and brilliant tactician Misato Katsuragi.
NOISES OF CICADA:
In the world of Evangelion, because of radical changes in the climate and environment caused by the Second Impact, Japan had lost her four seasons and had a summer climate all through the year. That is why in the anime the noises of cicada can always be heard.
PLUG SUITS:
This are the suits used by the pilots of the Evangelion Robot to increase synchronization rate and also to protect them from sudden change of temperature, to give them a heart massage when heart stops, and to keep central command informed as to the vital statistics of the pilot, among others. It fits the pilot's body contours when the plug suit's switch is pressed in the left wrist.
PROGRESSIVE KNIFE:
A melee-fighting weapon that forms a blade with high-frequency vibrating particles that cuts through the object of contact on a molecular level. It is one of the standard equipments for EVA and is usually stored in a space at the shoulders. EVA02 uses a new cutter-type knife -- even if the blade is broken, a new blade will come out from the back by pushing a button, making the knife useable again. It is often called in its abbreviated form: Prog Knife.
RITE OF PASSAGE:
A ritual ceremony performed when a person changes his identity in the society and acquires new responsibilities. It is a declaration to outside about the personal change in a social sense. It is also a prayer for safe and peace to come with the change. In ep.25 "Air", members of SEELE comment that the Human Complementation Plan is "the Rite of Passage aimed to bring new vigor to human which has become blocked-out"
S2 ENGINE:
Also known as Super Solenoid. The main source of power of Eva-05 to Eva-13. The new Eva Series are S2 Evas, meaning they don't need an electric power source to function (much like an Angel), The first time they experimented with an S2 engine was with Eva-04 but that led to the disappearance of Nerv's second branch in Nevada in the United States due to a failed experiment. Eva-01 became an S2 entity when it ate the 14th Angel, thus it doesn't need an Umbilical cable to derive energy.
SECOND CHILD:
It means Souryu.Asuka.Langley, who was chosen by Marduk organization, after Ayanami Rei, as a suitable candidate. She received training at the Germany branch of NERV, and was then sent to Japan as the dedicated pilot of EVA-02. When she lost her self-confidence because of low Synch-rate, she went missing for a while. She was finally found and brought back by agents from the secret agency NERV. At ep.25 "Air", she was still taking medical care in hospital ward when the Strategic Self-Defense Force invaded NERV.
SECOND IMPACT:
September 13, 2000. Second Impact occurred at the South Pole, when Adam exploded, melting all the ice and rising water by 80 meters. The second impact was caused by reducing Adam into an egg, to reduce the damage that will occur when the Angels come as predicted and written in the DEAD SEA SCROLLS. The worldwide catastrophe tilted the axis of the planet and forever made all weather climates, warm and moist. Japan lost its four seasons and summer continued all year round. Half of the world's population was killed in famines and both civil and international wars that followed. The Strong United Nations declared the second impact as the result of an asteroid hitting the South Pole and lied about its true cause.
SEELE:
Word taken from German to mean soul. It is a powerful international secret 12-man organization committee that has existed even before the second impact. All activities of SEELE are classified but rumored to be based from the Dead Sea Scrolls, the single most important artifact that predicts the future of mankind in the world of Evangelion. Keel Lorenz is the head of this committee and somehow Yui Ikari was connected with it and because of her Gendo became involved with SEELE.
SELECTED CHILDREN:
The persons picked by Marduk, the consultative body directly under the Human Complementation Committee, (in fact NERV is Marduk) who can pilot EVA. According to the order of being chosen, the persons are called First, Second, Third etc. What is common to all of them is that they are all young boys and girls who do not have mothers. By the way, the candidates of Children are grouped in Class 2-A of the First Municipal Junior High of Neo-Tokyo-3.
SHELTER:
When a special emergency warning is declared by Tokyo-3 in anticipation of an Angel attack all major buildings are lowered into Geofront and all civilians are requested to seek shelter at designated areas. These buildings are locked and bolted and they remain at the roof of the underground cave of Geofront. These serves two purpose, to protect the families of Nerv personnel living at Tokyo-3 including other civilians and to keep them from learning the actual situation occurring outside.
SINGLE FORM:
The objective of the Human Complementation Plan is the induced artificial evolution of human into "an organism that lives as a total single-form". This "single-form" means a life form that ends as a single individual. And this term is used to distinguish with "community form", which is life form formed by a multiple of individuals.
SOURYU ASUKA LANGLEY:
Second Children. Dedicated pilot of EVA-02. Nationality is USA, despite being one fourth Japanese and one fourth German. Having a high degree of intelligence, she graduated from university at 14. At the early stage of real battles, she boasted a higher Synch-rate than Third Children etc. The suicide of her mother led her to grow into a character of extreme aggressiveness. She could only keep her mental balance by making outward noises about her own excellence. Birthday: December 4. Blood type: O. Age: 14
SOURYU KYOUKO ZEPPLIN:
The real mother of Souryu.Asuka.Langley. She fell into mental breakdown in an accident during an experiment. Afterwards, she became a person who lived in her own world, so much so that she committed suicide. Her soul was used as the core of EVA-02.
STIGMA:
Shinji was stigmatized when the third impact happened. A nail wound appeared in both of his palm and lost all control of Eva-01. He then entered a dream state. In the Christian religion, when a person is said to have been stigmatized, he is under a spell of some sort.
THE RED EARTH PURIFICATION CEREMONY:
A word spoken by the members of Seele in ep.26, when Geo-Front reverted itself back into the "Black Moon" i.e. the Egg of Lillith. "Misogi" originally means a religious ceremony in which body is cleansed through bath in water. As an extension it means any method used to purify or sanctify a certain object. While there is a theory that the etymology of ADAM, the ancestor of all humans, is red or earth, its link with the "Red Earth" is unclear.
THIRD CHILD:
It means Ikari Shinji -- The third suitable person chosen by the Marduk organization. Without training, he managed to start up EVA-01, which had been ridiculed as "09 system" because of its 0.000000001% start-up probability, and surprised all those involved. Afterwards, he became the dedicated pilot of EVA-01 and stayed in Neo-Tokyo-3. Having a higher Synch-ratio than other Children, he often becomes the core force in battles against Angels.
THIRD IMPACT:
The process by which man can go to the next level of existence by shedding its body and combining with the spirits of other people to form a collective. A process by which can only happen if all the Angels are defeated. A third impact will also happen if an Angel touches Adam but instead of evolving man, it will destroy mankind. Gendo and Fuyutsuki believed that even defeating all the Angels the third impact will not make mankind evolve to a new collective and existence but instead death and destruction will take place, they tried to prevent it but failed. The third impact did happen but it was not completed and the souls of mankind are forever orbiting the earth when Lillith lost the AT Field that holds all the souls together. The third impact wasted earth and left it barren and died.
TOKYO-3:
A special city created solely to survive attacks from the Angels. It is located at Hakone, which contains Geofront below, a huge space that was spared by the raised sea levels of 2015 due to the surrounding mountains that enclose it. It is the site of the headquarters of Nerv.
TOKYO-2:
The site of the headquarters of the powerful United Nations. It is located at Matsushiro, Nagano. It was also the site of the second synchronization laboratory and facility of Nerv where Eva-03 was tested.
TREE OF LIFE:
When the Human Complementation Plan starts, EVA-01 grows into something like a tree, with its roots spread towards the sky and its branches extended to the ground. Regarding this Fuyutsuki comments, "EVA-01 is returned to the Tree of Life". A Tree of Life that has its roots and branches inverted appears on both Hindu scriptures and the Kabbalah. This was called "the Inverted Tree"
TREE OF SEPHIROTH:
A graph of symbols in Kabbalah (A mystery sect of Judaism that built around the mystery interpretations of "Torah". It represented, as a diagram, the physical rendition of the 3-dimensional images of the spiritual realm. The same diagram can also be found in Gendo's office. The diagram is composed of ten circles linked by 22 paths. It shows the route of how a human can attain the highest possible spiritual level. Moreover, many other interpretations are said to be possible: As a step-by-step diagram for meditation, as a map that shows the way to wisdom, or as a prediction for human's future etc. In ep.26 "Magokoro wo kimi ni", EVA series formed a big Tree of Sephiroth on the sky.
UMBILICAL CABLE:
Usually the Evangelion Robots are attached to umbilical cable to obtain electrical external power. This is because the robots can only sustain no more than 5 minutes and 2 seconds of nominal internal power if the umbilical cable is cut. The word is derived from the word "umbilical cord" of the womb that allows a pregnant mother to feed her unborn child.
UNITED NATIONS:
The United Nations in Evangelion is different from our world's United Nations. In the anime, it is strong, militaristic and powerful. The special UN organization known as Nerv is part of the UN but works independently from it and the UN military can only give support when Angels attack.
VALENTINE'S TREATY:
A treaty to end a worldwide war that started with the nuclear attack of Tokyo seven days after the second impact, September 20, 2000. The treaty was signed in February 14, 2001, Valentine's Day.
